El Centro León exhibe, en su Sala de Exposiciones Temporales, un centenar de obras de grandes maestros del arte fotográfico pertenecientes a la importante colección del Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno

La obra Christine (1977), de André Gelpke, es la identidad de El retrato…, una exposición única que permanecerá en el Centro León durante dos meses.
El retrato en la colección de fotografía del IVAM, la exposición que inauguro el Centro León en su Sala de Exposiciones Temporales, es una muestra única donde se funden dos de los proyectos expositivos más ambiciosos de la institución cultural valenciana: El retrato… y Gabriel Challado. Ambas muestras, que se habían exhibido por separado en Madrid y Nueva York, se han convertido en una sola en Santiago de los Caballeros, posibilitando a los dominicanos la oportunidad de apreciar originales de Nadar, Man Ray, August Sander Walter Evans, Paul y Strand, entre otros maestros. “Los ocho ámbitos que conforman el novedoso discurso museográfico que ha planteado el equipo del Centro León –ha expresado Josep Vicent Monzó, conservador en jefe de fotografía del IVAM, crítico de arte y fotógrafo–, no sólo consiguen fundir con un acierto extraordinario dos exposiciones esenciales en la trayectoria del IVAM, sino que son capaces de proponer una nueva lectura del conjunto. El retrato… que me he encontrado en República Dominicana es, sin dudas, la mejor versión posible de una muestra que resume toda la existencia de un arte, desde su creación hasta la actualidad”.La Colección de Fotografía del Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno es una de las más importantes del mundo. La selección de retratos que se presenta en el Centro León posibilitará un recorrido por los diferentes estilos que han primado en el arte fotográfico desde su aparición. Los disímiles rostros y apariencias, además, sintetizan la evolución de la fotografía desde finales del siglo XIX hasta principios del XXI. El retrato… conforma una amplia selección de obras indispensables que fueron realizadas por los principales maestros de la historia de la fotografía, presentando un gran abanico de posibilidades sobre las perspectivas que este tema ofrece.Con la aparición de la fotografía, el retrato pictórico exploró nuevos caminos, huyendo de una representación fiel a la realidad. Desde sus inicios contó con grandes autores que supieron interpretar los aspectos humanos con gran rigor, marcando las líneas maestras de su posterior y rápida evolución, ligada a las posibilidades de los avances tecnológicos, que facilitan cada vez más y mejor la mirada libre de los fotógrafos. Sin restricción por las técnicas utilizadas, podrá apreciarse en esta exposición desde las posibilidades que ofrecen las primeras miradas de los pioneros, hasta las experimentaciones que se originaron en la época de las vanguardias históricas. Los grandes maestros, también comparten su lenguaje con fotógrafos que miraron el mundo con la esperanza de su reconstrucción después de las guerras mundiales.La presentación en República Dominicana de la exposición El retrato en la colección de fotografía del IVAM, es un nuevo paso en los estrechos vínculos que se ha establecido entre el Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, de España, y el Centro León. Ambas instituciones culturales comenzaron sus proyectos en conjunto a mediados de 2005, con la exhibición en Valencia de Reinvenciones. Fotografía dominicana post dictadura, una muestra con obras de la Colección de Artes Visuales del Centro León que ahora se presenta en la Fundación Astroc, de Madrid, como parte de un periplo por toda España que el propio IVAM coordina. “Con la exhibición en España de Reinvenciones…, el IVAM le ofreció al Centro León la oportunidad de producir contenidos que aportaran nuevas ideas sobre el arte y la sociedad dominicana –afirmó recientemente Rafael Emilio Yunén, Director del Centro León–. Con la llegada de El retrato… a nuestro país, los dominicanos podrán reconocer y explorar los orígenes y la evolución del lenguaje fotográfico, que es justamente una de las expresiones que mejor ha legitimado sus identidades y su creatividad”.
